Mississauga/West Toronto (December 8, 2011) – All sites of the recently merged organization, The Credit Valley and Trillium Health Centre, showed significantly improved results in relation to the national average in Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) reports for 2010-11 issued by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) today.
In fiscal 2010-11Trillium’s HSMR results decreased to 76 as compared to 85 the previous year, and Credit Valley’s ratios improved from 85 to 81. These results are well below the national average for expected mortality rate, which is calculated to establish the national average baseline ratio of 100.
The Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) is a measure that compares the hospital’s mortality rate with the overall average national rate. HSMR is calculated as the ratio of the actual number of hospital deaths compared with the expected number of hospital deaths. The HSMR is based on diagnostic groups accounting for 80% of deaths in hospitals and is adjusted for other factors affecting mortality such as age, sex and length of hospital stay.
“Indicators such as the HSMR provide crucial information that enables us to track patient safety trends over time,” says Credit Valley Hospital site CEO Michelle DiEmanuele. “These latest results demonstrate the positive impact that we can have when an entire hospital team makes quality and patient safety the top priority.”

Patient safety initiatives at The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre that have contributed to these reductions in mortality rates include hand hygiene and infection control programs and education, implementation of surgical safety checklists and rapid emergency medical response teams.
