Our emergency team provides an optimal level of emergency care to all of our patients through immediate triage assessment prioritization and intervention, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Each year we see approximately 71,000 patients in the emergency department. The Credit Valley Hospital emergency department is among the busiest "ER's" in Metro and 905/GTA.
The type of care provided in the "ER" has shifted over the past several years, with more clinical intervention, diagnostic testing and observation care being provided in the "ER" in place of admission to a hospital bed whenever possible. More detailed information can be found in our special edition of A Credit To Your Health,

Paediatric visits are one-third of the visits to "ER" -- approximately 24,000 per year. The high volume of paediatric patients requires additional resources and specialized skills among the multidisciplinary team for children and families.
Features:
Ongoing expansion of the emergency department. Care is provided in five care centres:
Care Centre One: Provides care for emergent, acutely ill patients, e.g. trauma, resuscitation, etc.
Care Centre Two: Provides care for urgent priority patients requiring care and treatment.
Rapid Assessment Zone (RAZ): Provides care for Level 3 patients. This area has a few recliner chairs for those patients who are too ill to sit up comfortably. As soon as possible a group of level threes are moved into a new treatment area for assessment. Their bloodwork is completed and x-rays ordered. Some are given intravenous fluids. Then they are moved back into the sub-holding area and another group of level threes are moved into this treatment area. As soon as their test results are completed, the patient is called back into the treatment area to see the physician. This level accounts for fifty percent of emergency department patient volumes.
Care Centre Four: The is our ten bed holding area for emergency room patients who have been admitted to hospital and are waiting for an inpatient bed on a nursing unit.
Care Centre Five: This is our fast-track area for patients with minor complaints.
Quick Response Program: QRP staff provide early intervention and discharge planning to assist patients and families to manage care at home with appropriate supports and community services.
Crisis Intervention Team: The Crisis Intervention Team functions as an integral part of the emergency team for management of patients and families presenting with psychosocial problems.
